WHERE WE ARE

Oban

Oban High School not only serves a mainland catchment but also several of the aforementioned islands comprising its 26 feeder primaries. This presents its own issues and challenges for the young people.

Breakdown of H2O Work Areas:
  • Approximately 50% of Youth Workers time is spent at Oban High School, including development of close links with Glencruitten Hostel. The Hostel houses week boarders from the islands and others where daily travel home is impractical. We aim to further develop the links with Oban High School and to assist in relevant activities of pupils in partnership with teaching staff eg lunchtime activities, RME, PSED Curriculum, Princes Trust XL Club, Sport and pastoral care.
  • H2O workers liaise with local primary schools to form links with P7 pupils before their transition to High School.
  • Various social and sporting activities are organised at The Well for the 80+ young people who at an early age live away from home during term time at Glencruitten Hostel.
  • Street-based work includes linking with Oban Youth Café where a Youth Worker regularly attends. A Church of Scotland initiative in Soroba is already underway as well as working with the local sports centre, Atlantis and the Stramash outdoor programme.
  • Church linked work is seeking to establish networks with youth leaders and volunteers, and establish a regular forum for 'churched' young people to come together. Training for adults with an interest in working with young people will continue using material from Frontier Youth Trust. Great success has been made in this area also with a youth band having been formed and young people encouraged in their faith and building up their confidence. A Youth Alpha course has built on an earlier experience of Young People's Bible study and is very popular.

Buildings:
  • "The Well" at Lochavullin was offered to H2O on a tenancy to develop a base for H2O and as a centre for promoting local musical talent, particularly Celtic style. It is now the main base for H2O incorporating an office for our Youth Workers and is used as a training and activity base as well as being used successfully for DVD nights.
