CLUB H2O
Club H2O was initiaited in Spring 2008 to be a place of friendship and fellowship for our more senior citizens. We meet at The Well on most Thursdays during the school term from 2pm to around 3:30. It is a fairly informal and relaxed time with a programme of events and activities alongside some tea and home baking. Transport can be arranged if that poses a problem so let us know and we'll see what can be done.
At the moment Club H2O is hosting a weekly cuppa with tasty homemade baking at The Well. It attracts 6 regular ladies and 2/3 gentlemen. We would love to double these numbers but feel happy that we have this established number who want to come along each week.
The regulars themselves say how nice it would be to see some new faces. From the senior citizens they leave comments in our visitors' book like 'interesting', ' life changing', 'interesting conversation', 'lovely scones'... And the senior pupils say 'it was fun'.
Currently we are running an art project alongside the 3rd year programme in Oban High School. We are experimenting with pencils and simple sketches with one lady trying out line drawing. Most of the ladies and gentlemen are doing this for the first time in their lives, with others having studied art themselves!
Some people opt out and are happy to chat and watch. We've had a variety of 6th year students who have enjoyed getting involved some who also have never chosen art as a subject before.
We have had an introduction to weaving with fabrics of different textures and have again produced some very satisfying results. We visited the Environmental Fair held at the Corran Halls and attended a 'basket weaving' workshop.
As the approach to Christmas becomes evident, the High School the students will be preparing lunch for us and also Christmas hampers which we will distribute with the help of the 6th year students.
Last academic year the History project that we ran was so successful culminating with an hour long show on Oban Fm, it was great fun and it would be great to do this again picking up on our previous ideas and maybe plan more carefully with the group of senior citizens and the students alike since we've had a previous run at it.
So if you can please do get involved in any way you can. Its early days for Club H2O and we are hopeful to develop this further. We could easily double our numbers and make it even more of a success. Oban High School are very keen to pursue this work alongside their 'curriculum for excellence'. Its continued success will depend on bigger involvement with an understanding that this is something different from a tea & coffee morning because of its educational value for all. So put your thinking caps on and let's see if we can allow this initiative to continue to become integral in our community of Oban, and surrounding areas.
