Oban High School WW1 Battlefields Trip 2007

Battlefields Trip 2007For the past three years, Ewen Munro has been invited to join Oban High School's inspiring visit to the World War 1 Battlefields of Belgium and France. This has been an invaluable opportunity to explore so much with the pupils and staff. Understandably, the trip takes the group through a rollercoaster of emotions, requiring appropriate tact, discretion and at times opportunities to 'let off steam'. As it is vital to provide a balanced and healthy experience, H2O youth worker involvement has assisted in meeting needs in a very focussed way. Consequently, the youth workers role has covered a wide range of areas, from "entertainments officer", to supportive shoulder, providing both pupils and the staff team with an extra valuable dimension for the trip.

"The Battlefields Trip is a very emotional experience for staff and pupils. Some of the activities are full of laughter and fun and at other points pupils are stunned, silenced and tearful at what they have seen and heard. Ewen, like the rest of the staff, responded appropriately to use these situations with understanding, encouragement and good humour when it was needed."
Kirsteen Binnie, S6 Year Head and trip coordinator.
